Gen X - The Translation Generation
When my brother and I started Measured Brilliance our day-to-day work was mostly had a tech focus. That’s not always the case nowadays. Digital transformation can have varied and profound impacts on different generations within the workforce and society at large. I have witnessed first hand how digital transformation influences various age groups, although I tend to think of their ability rather than their age. I have certainly worked with some very enabled tech enthusiasts of an advances age, and met younger people who have not been exposed to technology in everyday life, and this is creating anxiety and barrier for them.
Let’s look at the current generations and the challenges they are experiencing.
Baby Boomers (Born 1946-1964)
Impact: Baby Boomers may experience a steeper learning curve as they adapt to digital tools and technologies introduced during transformation. However, they bring valuable experience and leadership skills to guide the transition.
Challenges: Resistance to change may arise due to a lifelong reliance on traditional work methods. Training programs and mentorship can help ease the transition.
Generation X (Born 1965-1980)
Impact: Gen Xers often bridge the gap between Boomers and Millennials. They may appreciate the efficiency gains of digital tools and readily adopt them. Their adaptability positions them as key contributors during the transformation.
Challenges: Balancing traditional work values with emerging digital expectations might be a consideration. Encouraging collaboration and continued learning supports their integration into the digital landscape.
Millennials (Born 1981-1996)
Impact: Millennials, having grown up in a digital age, typically embrace and champion digital tools. They bring a natural affinity for technology, fostering innovation and efficiency during the transformation.
Challenges: Ensuring meaningful engagement and providing opportunities for career growth and skill development are critical. Millennials thrive in environments that value continuous learning and purpose-driven work.
Generation Z (Born 1997-2012)
Impact: The first true digital natives, Gen Z individuals are often at the forefront of digital innovation. Their tech-savvy nature can drive the adoption of cutting-edge technologies and reshape workplace dynamics.
Challenges: Addressing potential issues related to over-reliance on technology and fostering effective communication skills are important considerations. Providing mentorship and guidance on professional norms supports their integration.
Aligning The Generations
I’m from Generation X and it’s clear those of us with the right digital skills will play a pivotal role in fostering effective communication between different generations. As a generation that straddles the analog and digital eras, we bring a unique perspective to the workplace. Many of us possess a deep understanding of traditional communication methods while readily embracing the advancements of the digital age. Gen Xers act as bridges, facilitating smoother communication between Baby Boomers, who may be adjusting to digital tools, and Millennials and Generation Z, who are native to the digital landscape.
Our adaptability and willingness to leverage technology for enhanced collaboration make them valuable mediators, helping to translate and integrate diverse communication styles. Through mentorship and sharing insights gained from their own experiences, Gen X fosters a cohesive and collaborative environment that encourages the exchange of ideas across generational lines during the ongoing journey of digital transformation.
While many Generation X individuals are comfortable navigating the digital landscape, it's important to acknowledge that not everyone within this generation possesses advanced digital skills. Some Gen Xers may still be developing their proficiency in digital technologies, and others may not have had extensive exposure to certain digital tools. This subset of Gen X, often referred to as "digital immigrants," might face challenges in adapting to rapidly evolving digital environments. Recognising and leveraging the diverse strengths of each generation while fostering a culture of collaboration and learning contributes to a successful and inclusive digital transformation journey, and we’re experts at that!
